Battlefields
North eastern France and Belgium are strewn with sights and memorials from both of the 20th centurys world wars but most notably from the First. There are so many cemeteries that litter the countryside, including Tyne Cot, the largest cemetery for Commonwealth forces in the world near Passendale, and the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing in Ypres, where you can witness the Last Post Ceremony. This ceremony has taken place at 8pm every evening since July 1928 (only interrupted by the Second World War, when the ceremony was moved to Brookwood Military Cemetery in Surrey).
These are awesome and moving places for pupils to visit, and offer a stark reminder, of the horror of war and the sacrifices made by previous generations, or they can indeed bring home this reality for the first time.
